| Bio: | Character Name: Declan Shaunassey Date of Birth: March 17, 1976 Age: 32 Race/Species: Dryad Hometown: Ennis, Clare County, Ireland Physical description: Standing in at an even six feet, Declan is of average height for his build. He keeps his rich chestnut brown hair long enough for him to run his fingers through and spike when the mood strikes him. With piercing green eyes and a disarming smile, you wouldn’t guess that this playful dude has the ability to switch from a fun loving fella to a formidable man in an instant. PB: Michael Trucco Personality: Declan has a wicked mischievous streak where he loves to play pranks and jokes on his friends, but over all he’s a friendly guy who likes to help out. If he finds out that his jokes bother someone, he will cease immediately and offer profound apologies. He never wants to hurt someone and goes out of his way to include everyone. He loves music, and can often be found playing various instruments he brought with him from Ireland. Loyal to friends, family and the forest, Declan feels right at home wherever he is, so long as there are trees around. He can stand visiting a city for a short time, but he feels homesick when away from the trees that make him feel comfortable. Background: Declan was born an oddity. Normally when dryads have a child, the baby is female. Males born dryads are incredibly rare to be found, thus at his birth all the dryads in Ireland were thrilled. A male child was a difficult one to conceive and the women spent the next years spoiling both mother and son. Declan was raised in the bosom of the wood nymphs, learning at their hands the ways to heal and encourage the growth of the forests and how to protect his fellow trees. Declan never went to a typical school to learn. The branches were his schoolroom, the fields and thick trucks were his playground. But his mother was a wise woman, concerned with the way the modern world was expanding, and knew her son would be the one that would have to protect the forests still. Humans were destroying trees everywhere to make room for their modern buildings, so she taught her son how to read and write. Everything that he would have learned in a human school, she found a way to teach him. Declan was a curious and inquisitive lad, and she encouraged him during his teenage years to venture into the towns and learn from the humans. Though he’d lived in the forest all his life, the townsfolk of Ennis thought him another farm lad and went out of their way to rectify his horrible teachings, as they saw it. Irish hospitality and a belief in the sidhe paved his way with the people, making it easy for him to learn. At first, he was not a fan of books; since they were made from the trees he called friends. He mourned their deaths, but did not let it sway him from devouring everything he could get his hands on. Humans were a funny sort, wanting desperately to believe in fae and magic, but denying it when presented with the truth. As the years past, he grew stronger in both his skills with the forest and plant life as well as understanding why people felt the need to expand their boundaries physically and mentally. Declan spent his time between his natural home and practicing everything he learned in the village. When Ennis wouldn’t provide what he needed to know, he’d go for a couple days to a larger city. He was unable to stay there for long, mostly because there were so few trees in Dublin, but the knowledge he found was limitless. He became a great fan of technology, especially computers and the internet when it finally emerged. Now there was even less of a reason to kill off trees for paper, everything was online! In 2001, knowing that the forests in Ireland were safe and secure with his fellow dryads, Declan decided to be adventurous, going across the great oceans to America. Upon arrival, he immediately was floored by the massive structures that stood in place of what should have been kilometers of forests. Deciding that America needed help protecting the forests, he quickly went through the training necessary to become a forest ranger. He loved his job, being able to work together with like-minded humans, and the occasional dryad or two in a legal manner was empowering and he felt that he was finally making a difference. He continued to take courses in security, weapons and safety, and self-defense, expanding his knowledge and learning how to apply his courses to protecting his forest home from the humans and humans from themselves. (Declan had learned that their destructive tendencies also leaned towards hurting their own kind, which he considered odd.) As the years passed, he transferred to several different national and state parks across the country, and finally moved to the Bradley Palmer State Park in South Hamilton, Massachusetts. He stayed there a few years, before hearing through some friendly dryads that a local school was looking for help on their security force. Feeling friendly, and that working with his own kind in the open would be a pleasant change, Declan applied for the position. Abilities: As a dryad, Declan has the ability to communicate with trees and other plant life. He also has the ability to help growth among plants, and he also has a prolonged life-span of about 300 years. He can also shift into a tree when the mood strikes him. Weaknesses: Declan doesn’t like to be around fire – it makes him feel weak and tired. If he gets even the smallest burn, it takes a long time to heal. At times, if he loses control over his emotions while around plant life he can cause extensive and overwhelming growth. Also, if his forest home is damaged and trees are hurt, he is hurt and can feel their pain. Staff Position: Security Training/Experience (staff only): Declan is a licensed forest ranger from 2001, and has taken extensive courses in firearms and personal safety, making him highly skilled with hand guns. He is licensed in first aid and CPR, and as such, has directed rescue activities. He is accustomed to long hours and late nights patrolling areas Housing Preference (staff only): No preference | ||||||||||
